Young people—boys and girls alike—will delight in these tales of warriors, saints and kings who fought the great battle between Right and Wrong. Drawn from history and legend, their adventures carry the reader across centuries and countries, telling of courage in battle, steadfastness in faith, and the harder victories won over oneself.

William Canton was a journalist, poet, and gifted author of children's books, including The Invisible Playmate (1894), W.V., Her Book (1896), and W.V.'s Golden Legend (1898), published in America as A Child's Book of Saints. His writing reveals both his great love for the ancient past and an extraordinary gift for bringing it vividly to life.

Published fourteen years after A Child's Book of Saints, A Child's Book of Warriors is its natural companion. Here again Canton writes in the rich, lyrical prose that makes his storytelling so distinctive. He does not write down to young readers: his language asks something of them, but rewards the effort with stirring images, beautiful turns of phrase, and a larger vocabulary for describing a larger world.

Above all, Canton reminds his readers that the heroic age is not over. The warriors of yesterday fought their battles in their own fashion; the same struggle between Right and Wrong belongs to us “now and here.”

This edition has been painstakingly retypeset in exact imitation of the turn-of-the-century style of the 1912 original and includes all of Herbert Cole's original illustrations, including the original cover.
